Week 7

5th Grade Buddies!
For 5th grade buddies this month we celebrated fall by doing leaf rubbings!

Mimi Mouse
Last week we worked on the letter Mm with our alphafriend Mimi Mouse!  We talked a lot about how the letter Mm says /m/ and what words begin with that sound.  Ask your child to tell you some words that start with Mm!

Sight Word
Last week we worked on the sight word: love.  We practiced spelling it and using it in a sentence.  Have your child practice writing it...they could write it on a note to grandma or grandpa!

Poems
Last week we had two poems again.  One was a sight word poem and the other went along with our color theme!

I See
I see a cat.
I see a dog.
I see a turtle.
I see a frog.
I see a ladybug.
I see a bee.
I see a spider.
I spider sees me!

Orange is a carrot.
Yellow is a pear.
Purple is a plum.
Brown in a bear.
Green is the grass.
Blue is the sky.
Black is the funny hat.
Red is a cherry pie.

Guided Reading
We have started doing guided reading groups.  In our room both Mrs. Collings and I have been pulling groups.  This group pictured below wrote their first sentence!  They were so proud!

I see a dog.

Here is Jafar and Jackson showing off one of our new work stations, Read the Room!  The kids get a clipboard and a sheet of paper then go around the room looking for special letter cards.  When they find one they have to write down the letter on their sheet.  It's been a hit in our room!

Book Order
On Thursday I sent home a book order.  If you would like to order a book for your child please return the order form or order online by this Thursday, October 4th.

Book-It
I also sent home a note and recording sheet about Book-it.  This was a program that I did when I was a child.  All you need to do is record when you read to your child and return the sheet by the end of the month and your child will get coupons to Pizza Hut!

Conferences
Don't forget that Parent/Teacher Conferences are this week!  Your confirmation time was sent home on Thursday.  If for some reason that time doesn't work anymore please let me know ASAP as my time blocks are pretty full!

Field Trip!!
This Friday is our field trip to JK's Pumpkin Patch!  Our class will be leaving at 10:30 from school and arrive back around 1:00.  Please remember to have your child wear closed-toe shoes that day and bring a jacket.  As of right now the high on Friday is 56!!

Week 6

Sammy Seal
We started intensely working on our first letter this week.  Each letter is attached to an Alphafriend to help the kids remember the letter.  Last week was Sammy Seal Ss!  You may have seen many Ss papers come home.  We worked on recognizing the letters, writing them, and know that Ss says /s/.  Be asking your child about words that begin with Ss!

Sight Words
We also started working on sight words.  We say and spell each word every day and do different actions to make it fun!  Ask your child what his/her favorite sight word activity was!  Last week our sight words were:

Poems
We also have weekly poems.  Last week we had the Color Rap because we are working on a color theme right now!

Here's the poem:

Yellow, Yellow, lemon jello.
Red, red, poppyhead.
Black, black, beetle back.
White, white, stars at night.
Green, green jelly bean.
Blue, blue, missing you!

Our other poem was a sight word poem called, I Can!

This poem goes:

I can jump.
I can run.
I can play in the sun.
I can swim.
I can skate.
I can bake a cake!

Field Trip Update
Our field trip is coming up quickly!  We're sitting very well with funds, too!  Thank you to all of those who were able to donate!  We are really looking forward to our trip to the pumpkin patch!

Conferences
Thursday a Parent/Teacher Conference confirmation sheet will be coming home with your child.  If you have had something come up and your time doesn't work, please contact me and we will see what we can work out!

PICTURE DAY!
Don't forget that picture day at Arnold is this Friday, September 28.  If you would like to order pictures you need to return the picture form by Friday!

Week 5

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom this week and did a name activity with it!  The kids did a fantastic job coloring their pictures and putting their names on with foam letter stickers.

Health and Safety
In health this week and last we worked on safety.  Safety at school and safety at home.  We talked about fire safety and how to stop, drop, and roll!  We also talked about what an emergency is and what to do in case of one.  Here are some pictures of the kids making a phone to practice dialing 911.

Field Trip
Hopefully by now you have received at least one of the two sheets sent home about our field trip! We are scheduled to go to JK's Pumpkin Patch on Friday, October 5th.  Thank you for those who donated funds, but we are just shy of half the amount we need!!  We're looking for money in any form we can get!  Also, we are not required to have a certain number of adults to supervise the kids, but if you would like to join us please just let me know!  Thanks!!
