Zoo Trip!

We had a great time at the zoo on Friday!  The kids saw lots of active animals, the howler monkeys were very entertaining.  One kept swinging up to the glass and hitting it right in front of the kids!  Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who came to help out!  Here are some of the pictures I took.

Looking at the reindeer

The red pandas were so cute!

The turtle was a popular spot!

Heading to the goats, llamas, and calves

The butterfly pavilion wasn't open yet but we took at ride on the caterpillar!

In the hive we were able to pet a corn snake, a cockroach, and a grasshopper!

We found Arnie Eagle!

The penguins were another favorite!

The kids were tired when we were done.  We took a rest while we waited for the bus.

Chicks!

We had the chance to visit a third grade classroom last week and they have been working on embryology.  They told us some things they had learned during their study and got to play with the baby chicks that hatched.  Some things we learned about embryology were:
  1. first they are a yolk tand then hey turn into a chick
  2. they are in eggs for a long time
  3. do not drop the egg or the baby chick won't be born!
  4. baby chicks drink the yolk
  5. they need light so they can hatch
  6. light keeps the egg warm - like when the hen sits on it
While we were in there visiting the chicks, these are some things we noticed about them:
  1. they were cute
  2. their feathers were fluffy
  3. they pooped a lot!!
  4. their feet were sharp
  5. they were different colors - yellow, black, brown, white
  6. they chirped a lot

3rd Quarter Weeks 3 & 4

Literacy
We worked on the letter Qq, which we talked about is married to the letter Uu!  They never go anywhere without each other! :-)  As you can see, our Qq list was quite short, but there just aren't as many words that start with Qq as other letter!

Some of the sight words we've been working on are:

5th Grade Buddies
We worked with our 5th grade buddies last week on the early out day.  We read the book The Mitten, by Jan Brett on the computer.  During the story, the kids colored a picture matching the animal in the story.  The kids really enjoyed it!

Assemblies!
Congrats to Ali on being the January Kid of Character!  Ali does a great job of following directions, participating in class, and getting along with other.

Also congrats to the following students for having outstanding attendance in 2nd quarter!  Thanks you for always having them at school and on time!

Math
We have been working a lot with teen numbers in math.  One of the activities we have done is to build the teen numbers with a ten stick and cubes.  We also have equation cards to put on the tray to show the teen number.  Then we do our finger flashes to show that 11 is 10 and 1, etc.
