I Can!

We introduced two more workstations last week:

Roll, Say, Keep

Read the Room

Sight Words
We have also learned 2 sight words so far this school year: I, can.  Ask your child how to spell them.  You could even have your child try to write them!

Assessment
I have assessed the kids on letter ID and numbers 1-5 in the last 2 weeks.  Coming home tomorrow in their purple folder will the results of there assessment, where they are going to go next, and how we will help them get there!  Please contact me if you have any questions!

Homework
Your child will be bringing home their first homework this week!  It will come home in their purple folder.  This folder will be coming home with your child every day from now on.  Please check it each night for homework or important papers.  Tomorrow they will be bringing home the poems we read last week.  Please read them with your child each night.  Either you or your child can point to the words as you are reading them together.  On Friday send the poems back to school and your child will receive a homework prize!  Let me know if you have any concerns or questions!

Early Out!
Don't forget that Tuesday is an early out day!  The kids will be dismissed at 2:18.  Please make sure you have a plan for what your child is doing after school.  If it is different than normal please contact me so I know!  Thanks!

Celebrating Star Behavior!

We have a whole class incentive for good behavior.  If myself or someone else catches the kids doing something great (ie. walking quiet in the hall, cleaning up quickly, etc.), then they get a star!  Our first goal was to get 10 stars....and we did it in the first week!  So on Friday at the end of the day we had a popsicle party!  Our new goal is 15 and then we will get to watch a video!

A Little Insight!

If your child is anything like mine, who also just started kindergarten, he doesn't explain things very well! :-)  So to help give you a better understanding of what's going on this week, here is a rundown of some of what we've done:

Stories
We've read several stories this week:

  • "Animals in the Park".  Ask your child what genre this book is (it's an ABC book!).
  • "Library Mouse".  This one is about a mouse named Sam.  Ask your child what Sam's does in the library (reads lot of books and then writes some of his own!)
  • "The Kissing Hand".  You should have gotten a picture with your child's handprint and a poem about this one!
  • "Anno's Counting Book". This is a math book with scenes in it.  Ask your child what they drew on their scene of 2 page today. (They were really awesome!)
  • "The Ugly Duckling".  Ask your child to tell you what is special about the ugly duckling!

Phonics
  • We've talked about the letters A-D so far.  Ask your child if he/she can do the letter chant for those letters!
  • We have been working with the word "I".  We've practiced writing it (not on paper yet!) and using it in a sentence.  Have your child complete this sentence: I have __________.
  • We've been reading poems and counting how many words are in the lines.  We've done: Jack and Jill, Mary Wore a Red Dress, and Wee Willie Winkie.

Math
In math yesterday we used our math tools for the first time!  They got to explore with them for a while and then we put the number tiles in order from 1-5.  After counting them we found the number 3 and the kids showed me what three was with their square inch tiles!

And today, after talking about the scenes in "Anno's Counting Book", we all drew our own scenes of 2.  There were some pretty creative drawings!
